Brussels has launched a formal antitrust inquiry into Google to see if the US group violated EU rules by favoring its own online advertising technology services to the detriment of competitors.
The investigation will find out whether Google “distorts competition by restricting third-party access to users’ data on websites and applications for advertising purposes, while reserving such data for its own use,” the European Commission said in a statement on Tuesday.
“Online advertising services are at the heart of Google և publishers’ monitoring of their online services,” said Margaret Vestager, EU Executive Vice President for Competition Policy.
“Google is available for online display advertising at almost every level of the supply chain,” he added. “We are concerned that Google has made it difficult for competitive online advertising services to compete with so-called advertising technologies.”
