Firefighters say eight people were seriously injured in a landslide in Gwangju.
At least nine people have been killed and eight others seriously injured in South Korea when a five-story building that was in the process of collapsing suddenly collapsed into a bus, local fire officials said.
The crash happened Wednesday afternoon when the bus was stopped on the street next to the site of the Gwangju demolition, about 270 kilometers (168 miles) southwest of the capital Seoul.
Dramatic television footage showed the bus, which was carrying 17 people, buried in the wreckage, drowned by a huge cloud of dust when the building collapsed.
Yang Yi-jen, who runs a shop across the street, said he ran outside in shock at the loud noise that made him feel like “the country is shaking.”
“I could not see the road clearly, as if it were covered with thick fog,” he told Yonhap news agency. “I checked the camera to see if the building had collapsed inside the bus.”
The cause of the collapse is unclear, և The police investigation continues.
All workers at the site of the demolition were evacuated before the collapse.
Following a series of disasters, South Korea is taking steps to improve its infrastructure security record.
More than 500 people were killed in a department store collapse in 1995, the worst disaster in the country. A year ago, 49 people were killed when a bridge collapsed.
