China allows couples to have three children during a demographic crisis

China will allow couples to have three children, ignoring its historic family policy of canceling the demographic crisis altogether when Beijing said the population was growing at the slowest pace in decades.

China’s state-run Xinhua news agency said the Communist Party’s politburo of 25 senior officials had concluded that the new “three-child policy” was aimed at “actively addressing the aging population and preserving China’s natural human resources.”

Experts, the public and even China’s central bank have called on the government to lift birth restrictions altogether. the census published this month showed that in 2010 The population increased by 5.4% from 1.34 billion. The lowest rate of census growth since the People’s Republic of China began collecting data in 1953.

But Beijing did not want to cut itself off from a decades-old population control apparatus that pursued an unpopular one-child policy that often used brutal measures, including forced abortions and sterilizations.

Over the past five years, China’s fertility rate has plummeted to 1.3 births per woman, one of the lowest rates in the world. The two-child policy, introduced in 2015, had little effect on the birth rate.

Ogra demographers say that rising incomes, urban development, and the cost of raising children have led to a decline in fertility that will be difficult to bring back.

The announcement of the three children’s policies received a strong response on social media, despite widespread criticism of the government.

“I advise you to first solve the basic problems of child support plus. “The unfair treatment of women in the workplace before asking them for children.” Read Weibo’s most liked answer on the microblogging platform Xinhua.

“Many of us were the only children of our generation. At that time [the government] fined us. Now they want us to raise four elderly parents plus three children. “Only in your dreams,” reads another answer.
